The Mushroom Museum’s suggestion is accepted!
A significant decision for the region was taken by the Municipal Council of the Municipality of Meteora, almost unanimously (two votes against). The decision concerns the designation of Kalambaka as the “City of Truffles” since it is an area that is rich in this unique and very expensive underground mushroom. At the same time, as an area with high tourist activity, it has the infrastructure for developing activities related to the truffle.
These are actions, which can include almost all the productive sectors of the area (restaurants, hotels, trade, etc.), resulting in the diffusion of benefits throughout the local community.
It is a decision that, if implemented, can make Kalambaka a point of reference, not only because of the Meteora rocks, which are in any case, its great advantage but also because of a complementary physiognomy that it acquires and which signals the possibility of alternative activities for the visitor, focusing on the truffle.
This decision came about after a suggestion by the Natural History Museum of Meteora and the Mushroom Museum, which was discussed with the city’s institutions, and the Municipality’s tourism committee and ended up in the Municipal Council, which overwhelmingly adopted it.
The Museum’s Director Mr Nikos Pallas, on the occasion of this event, made the following statement: “We warmly thank the Mayor and the Municipal Council for this decision, that shows that our Municipal Authority, has the ability to take and manage decisions, which leave a strong developmental imprint in the region and concern the whole of society. We will always be helpful in these efforts.”
